SDI RESCUE DIVER COURSE
The SDI Rescue Diver Course is designed to develop the knowledge and necessary skills to effectively perform diver rescues and assist and administer the necessary first aid in the event of an emergency. You will learn skills such as how to perform self rescues, buddy rescues, recognize and calm potential panic divers, administer proper first aid to divers that have experienced dive related injuries, conduct effective search patterns and manage accident scenes.
- Must be a current Dive La Trobe member
- Must be an Advanced Adventure Diver or equivalent, and have a minimum of 15 logged open water dives
- If available, provide proof of current CPR, first aid and oxygen (O2) provider certification*
* Note: If students possess current CPR and First Aid certifications, a discount might be available. If not, the CPR, first aid and oxygen provider courses will be combined with the rescue program by a DLT qualified instructor.
What you can expect to learn
The rescue certification course is designed to develop the knowledge and necessary skills for an individual to effectively perform diver rescues and assists, and administer necessary first aid.
You will cover all of the following and more!
- Prevention and causes of diving accidents (Stress and psychological factors, Physical conditioning, Equipment, Surface drowning syndrome and more)
- Diving lifesaving (Self-rescue, Diver assists, Surface and underwater rescues, In-water artificial respiration, shore exit techniques, Diver first aid, review of oxygen administration and more)
- Hyperbaric injuries and management
- Accident Management
Some of the in-water skills include:
- On the surface, identify and assist a properly equipped skin or scuba diver simulating breathing difficulties, tiredness, leg cramps and early panic symptoms
- Locate and bring to the surface a scuba diver simulating unconsciousness to the surface from approximately 6 metres/20 feet
- Upon surfacing, transport the unconscious diver 50 metres/150 feet to shore or boat, simulating in-water rescue breathing
- Upon reaching the shore or boat, with the assistance of one aide, remove the diver from the water
What you need to know
- Course cost is $600 (Inclusive of First Aid/CPR and Oxygen Administration certificates)
- A deposit of $300 will be taken along with your registration. The reminder fee will be issued a week before the course starts.
- A discount of $50 can be applicable if students possess a current certificate in First Aid/CPR. Please show evidence of your certificate via treasurer@divelatrobe.org.au
- Included in the price: All gear and air refills, Oxygen administration review, First Aid and CPR in water and shore practice.
- Not included in the price: Accommodation, boat dives, food, transportation.
- Accommodation is optional but highly encouraged. AirBnb accommodation will be arranged closer to the date and the costs will be shared amongst students.
- Oxygen administration and CPR and First Aid training courses will be scheduled on a different date to the course.
